Tilcon Creates Video with CT Science Center
Section: Press Releases

CT Science Center’s Development Director Christine Moses interviews Kevin Miller for the Making Concrete video

As the new Connecticut Science Center is built, the construction of its dramatic new building is being used to teach science and math skills to kids.

Tilcon, as the sole concrete supplier for the new building, was asked to help create a video as part of a series of videos on The Science of Building, which are available for viewing on the Science Center’s website under the Learning Connection link.  The video, entitled, “The Science of Making Concrete: From Quarry to Jobsite,” explains the process of making concrete and the chemical reaction it undergoes. Other videos in the series include one that explains how glaciers and erosion caused the CT River to meander, affecting lifestyles along the river and dictating how the Science Center’s foundation should be built.

The Science of Making Concrete video was filmed at Tilcon’s Plainville Quarry and takes the audience through the entire process of concrete production. Tilcon’s Director of Technical Services for Concrete Kevin Miller stars in and narrates the film, which starts by showing a quarry blast, and then proceeds to the primary crusher demonstrating how the stone gets sized and then transported by conveyors to the stone bins.  The video then shows what happens in concrete dispatch when an order is taken and goes on to the concrete plant where the order is filled and concrete exits into the mixer truck.  The environmental benefits of the concrete reclaimer are also highlighted in the video as well as Tilcon’s focus on safety in all of our production processes.  Finally, the concrete is delivered to the jobsite where Kevin describes the job specifications necessary for the successful concrete erection of the new Science Center.

The video can be launched from Tilcon’s website, or, from the Connecticut Science Center's website at www.ctsciencecenter.org.

The new Connecticut Science Center will open in 2008 in Hartford.
