Tilcon Connecticut has won a 2005 Quality in Construction Award from NAPA (National Asphalt Pavement Association) for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. Tilcon’s Paving Manager Randy Jones received the award on behalf of the company at a special ceremony at the Association’s 51st Annual Convention, “Ride the Pavement,” in Hollywood, Fla. The winning project, CT DOT VIP I-91 Project #100-172, milling and overlay, took place on a three-mile section of Interstate 91, northbound and southbound, in the towns of North Haven and Wallingford, Connecticut.
“NAPA selects the recipients of its paving awards using a known set of standards that have been shown to give a good result,” commented Richard F. Moore, Jr., 2005 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work that the HMA industry is achieving.”
Because the road is so heavily used, the work had to be done all at night and it was necessary to maintain proper mat and joint densities because of the high traffic counts. These conditions meant extensive planning between Tilcon, ConnDOT and traffic control personnel in order to ensure safe working conditions and maximum quality and production within the tight timeframe allowed. The smooth HMA roadway was completed in three less shifts than anticipated, saving taxpayer dollars and creating less of an inconvenience for the traveling public.
